The flyer reads, "One dark mulatto runaway, aged fourteen, well dressed and bright..."

Blanche thinks he has it good. He has risen above the field hands to a position helping run a printing press. He's well fed, never physically mistreated, and he has taught himself to read, though he keeps the illicit skill a secret. Most importantly, he has been promised a chance at emancipation. Then, in a single bloody morning, his world is overturned, his master lies dead, and his widow has no intention of following through with her husband's promise to free him.

Blanche would never have considered running away from his old life, but faced with the prospect of being sold as a laborer or worse, he forges his free papers and flees north, a fugitive, to create his own future. Only a few steps ahead of the slave catchers, he travels hundreds of miles across the violent backdrop of "bleeding Kansas" in the 1850s, a land torn by apart by two very different visions of humanity.

This richly researched work of fiction weaves actual historical characters and institutions into the gripping story of a young man born into slavery but resolute in his quest for freedom.

Three Links of Chain Dennis Maley 9780986115806 Books Reviews

Was fairly good book but have read many more slave books I like better.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about this period in history. Interesting book that me wanting to read more.
If you want a book that you can start and not pick up for a couple of days, this book is it. A good easy read. It was hard to remember how young Blanche was. A little disjointed at times but not hard to figure out.
Anyone interested in the plight of Negro slaves and the success of The Underground Railroad will be interested in this historical novel--especially in the Kansas area.
Excellent story. I didn't realize, until I read the post notes, that it was based on a true story! Written in such a manner that it made you feel as though you were looking through the eyes of the protagonist.
The author has a decent turn for narrative and a remarkable penchant for history. This being a narrative based on some part in fact it hadn't a precise closing - none of that feel good "and all was as it should be". But what ever is? I liked it enough to read through and even the historical notes appended.
Good history presents facts and dates in an enjoyable manner so they can be retained. Great history immerses the reader into the situation and produces a more complete understanding.
Three Links of Chain is great history.
The story itself breaks no new ground, where the author makes the material rise above the fray is in the details and growth of character. The reader isn't bludgeoned with events, instead, they are integrated into the story seamlessly. By the end, the reader relates to the situation and time period to walk away with a degree of enlightenment.
In a time where society is focused more on sound bites and one-sided soapbox outrage, Three Links of Chain stands out as important history wrapped around a sympathetic character's quest for what we've too often come to take for granted.
I really liked this book. It was interesting to see how the main character, Blanche, grew over the course of the story. History in my school was presented as a bunch of dates and seemingly disjointed facts. There was nothing about it that personalized it for me, giving me anything to relate to that might cause a deeper understanding. But Mr. Maley gave me that understanding.

I learned some things about the Underground Railroad that school hadn't taught me - like how a slave might find and connect with someone that was a part of it. Actually, I learned quite a bit from this book. But none of it was preachy or disjointed.

Written from Blanche's point of view, I was privy to his thoughts and the often double-mindedness of his thinking. Despite his slave status and all that entailed, there were still periods of time when he thought it would be foolish to run away because he thought he had it pretty good. I wondered how he could think that. Thankfully, Mr. Maley provided insight through Blanche's thoughts that shined a light and provided some answers that I might never have understood on my own.

I also appreciated the Author's Note at the end of the story which outlined exactly what was factually accurate and where Mr. Maley had fictionalized by utilizing composites. Moreover, the story let me know what happened to each of the characters. No one should read this story without reading the Author's Note at the end.

A great read and well worth the time and money.
